More About Lazian Olive Oil

Lazio is the coastal region bordering the Tyrrhenian Sea that hosts Italy’s capital city, Rome. The annual olive oil production in this region typically makes up about 4% of Italy's total. The culture of olives and olive oil began thousands of years ago in Lazio. Olive oil production had great significance during the heights of the Roman age, and the centrality of Rome resulted in a long history of local olive groves managed and supported financially by the Vatican. With Rome built across the ancient flood plain of the Tiber River, the area surrounding the city is primarily lowlands. However, much of the olive production takes place in the more hilly provinces of Latina and Frosinone to the south and Viterbo to the north. Known for its once-volcanic mountains, which today have become massive lake-filled calderas, Viterbo province has volcanic soil that enriches the land. The rugged, stony hills of Latina and Frosinone are the preference of the native Itrana olive. Other common olive varieties in Lazio are Caninese/Canino, Frantoio, Leccino, Maurino and Moraiolo. At Olive Oil Lovers we work with Iannotta from Latina province, Quattrociocchi, which farms lands in both Latina and Frosinone, and Tamia of Viterbo province.
